One year ago I stepped off a plane and discovered a land that has captivated my thoughts ever since.

One long weekend while studying in Rome, I let a rabbit hole of curiosity lead me to Istanbul. The sounds, smells, sights, lit my senses on fire and intrigue pulled me through the streets.

A brief sample of that weekend included:

• Turkish coffee, made in traditional copper pots submerged in hot sand.
• Spices and markets from the entire spectrum of flavors and colors
• A visit inside the Blue Mosque and around The Hagia Sofia (mosques from the Ottoman Empire)
• A tour of the Basilica Cistern - built during the 500’s with repurposed Roman structures such as Medusa’s head
• Cats, cats, and more cats
• Delicious food - I enjoyed every meal!
• The Bosphorus River that runs through the city and separates the European and Asian side

I barely dipped my toes in one corner of Istanbul, which is only one corner of Turkey, of one corner of the former Ottoman Empire.

This world is vast, with cultures that at once feel so different and so familiar. They feel like the most amazing sense of home and alien that I have yet to find a word that captures the complexity contained. Perhaps another language, or a word from antiquity will reveal itself to embody the full depth of this feeling within.

Istanbul, you have enraptured me.

Start today. Pick up the dream you’ve held in your mind, and begin to take action. Effort towards your dream will spur further effort.

What have you longed to do and are ready to begin?

When life hands you an opportunity, take it. Show up with knees knocking, sweaty pits, and nervous twitches.

Make notes on what you want to say, pause when you lose your thought or are caught off guard by the question, and share from what you know.

Today was a day to lean into a new habit of being seen in front of a bigger audience and grow through the process.

It will take time for the words to formulate outside of bewilderment, rage, disgust, and heartbreak. There is a lot of work to do.

Mindset Shift | How to develop an adventure mindset, regardless of budget and time available.

1. Pick a nearby city, county, or region (think drivability in a day).

2. Grab a coffee or tea or other favorite beverage.

3. Invite a friend, or go solo.

4. Notice the scenery as you drive. Stop at a farmer’s market. Look around with fresh eyes to see what you discover.

5. Document your day. Take photos. Write in a journal. What did you notice? How did you feel? What surprised you? What didn’t you get to see that you wish you had while exploring?

An adventure mindset is a choice that can be developed through intention.

Curating a life and then falling in love with that life is something I only dreamed about in years past. I never thought it could happen and that I was doomed to suffer and struggle for the foreseeable future. But, this year something shifted for me. A lifetime of culminating experiences, skills, and lessons have converged and are actively taking shape in ways that would have blown my mind just a few years ago.
